Springbrook Enhancement Lists
Springbrook Version 7.16.0.0 to 7.17.0.0 Upgrade Enhancements
This document provides a list of enhancements available to current Springbrook clients when upgrading from Version 7.16.0.0 to Version 7.17.0.0. When combined with the 7.17.0.0 to 7.18.0.0 Upgrade Enhancements list, clients can get a comprehensive picture of the enhancements and updates available when upgrading from 7.16.0.0 to 7.18.0.0, the most recent on-premise Springbrook release.
Clients upgrading to Springbrook Cloud would also need to review the 7.18.0.0 to Cloud Upgrade Enhancements list.
Springbrook Code Modernization
Springbrook’s underlying system architecture has been updated for 7.17.0. This project involved a complete programmatic translation from Progress 4GL to the more modern C# programming language. This update will result in a number of “behind-the-scenes” improvements to the application without affecting the familiar look and feel for application users.
Changes to be aware of include:
- The Progress/OpenEdge application server tier is no longer supported and has been replaced by the Springbrook Application Server component. Springbrook recommends a new/clean operating system installation. Alternatively, Progress can be uninstalled/removed from the existing server. Organizations may also stop using Progress and allow it to remain on the existing application server, though Springbrook recommends against this approach.
- As a result of the above change, Progress DBMS (database management system) is no longer supported.
- .NET 4.5 is a new server-side requirement.
- IIS 7 has been a server-side requirement for some time, but the Springbrook application tier is now completely dependent upon IIS. This provides increased visibility into the application layer and an opportunity for better system monitoring.
- Regular application users no longer need file share permissions to most of the Springbrook application server (users only need read-access to the ClickOnce Deployments). The only users that will need direct access to the Springbrook application server are IT staff or individuals that need to save external or local reports. This enhancement provides improved control over how users access files from the Springbrook application tier.
- Upgrading to 7.17.0 will require minor changes to the machine.config file on the Springbrook application server. These changes to the config file will impact every .NET application on the server in question. The specific change allows for transaction times longer than the default of 10 minutes.
- IT staff should review these changes before upgrading from 7.16.0 to 7.17.0.
Client Logging
The Logging Settings window has been added to the Help menu. This window allows users to log information about the current session, including information about events such as errors, warnings and updates.
Exception Reporting
The Exceptions Reporting window has been enhanced for 7.17.0 to utilize standard Springbrook data grid sorting functionality. This is a minor change that will not impact the user interface.
Job Scheduler
The Job Scheduler has been enhanced for 7.17.0. This window will now display “Review” instead of “Complete” in the Status column if the job was completed but needs additional attention.
The Job Scheduler has been updated to utilize parallel processing. This update will improve performance when multiple jobs are being processed simultaneously.
Login Screen
The Login Screen has been updated to include a splash animation for 7.17.0. This animation will help prevent users from attempting to login a second time while the initial login attempt is being processed.
Performance Tuning
The application has undergone another round of performance tuning for 7.17.0. This ongoing tuning process is designed to improve general system performance by improving the application code.
Query by Example
Query by Example reports across the application have been updated for 7.17.0 to more closely match standard database naming and sorting conventions. All database-specific tables and fields are now rendered in lower case and all fields are now ordered by name. While this change will have no effect on Query by Example report functionality, organizations that use third-party reporting tools may need to update any reporting queries written before the upgrade to 7.17.0.
The Query by Example Maintenance window has been updated application wide to sort the available report fields by field name. This change applies to fields in both the Primary and Secondary tables and is meant to improve efficiency.
The PR Employee Location field has been added to the list of available fields on the Query by Example Maintenance window. This field corresponds to the Location field on the PR Employee Maintenance window.
