Year-End Processing in Cirrus

Summary

You run most year-end processes once a year, so this topic collects them in one place. Use it to find the checklist you need, the order to run the processes in, and links to the step-by-step topics.

Cirrus has two kinds of year-end:

  • Calendar year-end happens every December 31 for every agency. It covers the tax forms you send to employees, vendors, retirees, and the IRS and SSA: W-2s, 1099s, 1099-Rs, and ACA forms (1095-C/1094-C). It also covers payroll accruals and tax tables for the new year.
  • Fiscal year-end happens on the last day of your agency's fiscal year. For many agencies that is June 30 or December 31. It covers closing the General Ledger, setting up the new year's chart of accounts and budget, and rolling open purchase orders forward.

If your fiscal year ends December 31, you do both at the same time. Start the calendar year-end tax forms first, because their deadlines come sooner.

New for tax year 2026

  • The IRS FIRE system stops accepting files after November 19, 2026. Select IRIS as the Export Type when you export 1099s and 1099-Rs, and get an IRIS Transmitter Control Code (TCC) before you file.
  • The 1099-NEC and 1099-MISC reporting threshold is $2,000 for payments made in 2026. It was $600 for 2025 payments.

Before you start any year-end process

  • Commit or delete open batches that contain transactions for the year you are closing. Year-end processes read only committed data.
  • Run each process's Proof List and review it before you print, export, or commit.
  • Check that you have the right forms, IRS and SSA credentials, and printer setup before you print.
  • Track each process in the Jobs Viewer window (SS> Jobs Viewer).
